For the past five albums, Slowcoaster has been pretty open about their new albums. They have played most songs live before the record is even released. But 2012 is going to be different for this trio from Nova Scotia.
Their sixth album is due out by September and they don’t plan on playing any songs live, or releasing any information on the CD, until the summer.
They will release one single, which will hit the airwaves this spring. Lead vocalist Steven MacDougall said it is a big secret.
“I can give you one hint, it is going to be a hardcore summer song.”
This has been a busy few months for Slowcoaster. They recently went on a tour in China this past fall.
One of MacDougall’s most memorable moments was when him and his other band members were on a 45-minutes car ride that turned into a three-hour car ride because their driver got lost and they did not have a translator. But Slowcoaster made the best of it and a few hours later they got to their hotel.
They have a mini web series on YouTube about their tour in China and during episode two you can laugh along with them and watch them get lost in China.
Slowcoaster has released five albums in 10 years. The latest album, The Darkest of Discos, was released in January 2011, and was a 13-track album.
MacDougall’s favourite song on that album was the title track.
“Darkest of Discos took the longest to write. We slowly picked away at it for two years.”
MacDougall enjoys music because it is a way to get out the message.
“One person came up with a thought and then 5,000 people are singing about that thought. It is profound.”
Getting a message out is one of his goals. Another is to see the world. MacDougall wants to travel because he enjoys experiencing new cultures and art.
“When you travel you get a new appreciation for things.”
On March 10 they released their fourth video in their YouTube mini series. You can check it out on their YouTube channel. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hbi6FrnQHms
