Belbin’s Grocery is a foodies dream. Located inthe heart of the Signal Hill – Quidi Vidi neighborhood on beautiful Quidi Vidi Road, it is one of the last great family run grocery stores that were once commonplace in St. John’s.

Belbin’s has been a fixture on Quidi Vidi Road for well over 70 years now and it’s still family owned and operated with some of the best service in the city. It’s old fashioned looking on the outside, located in an early 20th century building that has been well kept. The inside is much larger than one would think; a butcher and Belbin’s Meals to Go kitchen facility are all built into the building.

Premium service and quaility products are what matters at Belbin’s, and they go out of their way for their many loyal customers. As an example, they still help load grocery bags aboard vehicles – a practise that has been way out of favor at the major grocery chains for at least 20 years.

The staff are knowledgable about what products the store sells and are always willing to help guide a customer in the store, or to order a product if the store is out of them, letting customers know when the order arrives. Belbin’s also offers grocery delivery for around 5 dollars on top of the grocery bill and no grocery order is too big or small. This is an excellent service for Belbin’s fans who aren’t in the immediate area or are just too busy, as many of us seem to be at times.

Besides selling groceries and specialty items, Belbin’s also has their own menu called Meals to Go, a wide variety of meals made from scratch that can be quickly heated and enjoyed, and are of exceptional quality. Meals to Go makes everything from salads and sandwiches, to soups and pasta bakes, Mexican dishes, and Newfoundland favorites like Fish and Brewis and Pea Soup. They have it all from basic Mac and Cheese to Pan Seared Duck Breast. The array of items offered is impressive, whether it’s a quick dinner for one or something for a dinner party, they have you covered.

Some of the standouts on Belbin’s Meals to Go menu include, the Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup, a mildly creamy soup that perfectly blends the flavors of roasted peppers and tomatoes and is at once sweet and savory. It has a thick sauce like consistency that would make it equally at home poured over some al dente penne or rotini.

Their Mullagitawny is also divine and is a hot seller. Their burritos, which are made by Zapata’s Mexican Restaurant, are the perfect quick supper. I especially like the BBQ Chicken and Hot Chili Steak varieties which have hearty, zesty from scratch fillings that are full of flavor. Their Meddittereanean Salad is a tasty, colourful blend of mixed greens, red onion, feta cheese, kalmata olives, sundried tomatoes, and pine nuts, all with their own balsamic dressing, made in house and one of four varieties they make. The salad is a great side for any Meals to Go dish, especially their pastas.

Belbin’s Meals to Go also offers a number of desserts, from pastries to cakes. Especially good are their Bakeapple and Partridge Berry Cheesecakes. Their Tea Buns with Raisins are as good as any your Grandmother made.

If you’re looking for a unique grocery experience, definitely give Belbin’s a try. Some items can be pricier than the major grocery chains, but Belbin’s carries hard to find items, most notably gluten free and vegan foods, gourmet products, and popular items from the U.K. There is also a good variety of local produce and meat, and it’s good to see a local business show support to local famers like this.

The staff are excellent, friendly, and really helpful, you won’t find better customer service in St. John’s. Swing by Belbin’s for one of their Meals to Go or some grocery shopping and see why local is better.
