Life of empty kisses

What are you trying to be?
What are you trying to prove?
These things that you do
Have not made my emotions move
I’m just me
You are not that you that I see
I know bits of you
But there are so many missing puzzles pieces
How will I comprehend?

What you don’t share
Is what furthers the distance
The already gaping hole

Your fear must be gone
We could never grow apart
For we were never too close

Will this fear stand in your way forever
Then let it be
Life filled with empty kisses
Something I will not miss

What I do not understand
Is how you ask me to be open to you
When all you do
Is hide from me

Like a ghost among selfish desires
You want me
This is a one way deal
For I cannot have you

Life is like a dream
Where secrets lie
Kisses are just a whisper away
But you are my nightmare
Arms length away from me

What keeps us like this?
Inches from a tight embrace
Where kisses miss their meaning

You are my emptiness
You are my empty kiss

BeetleJuice in review

The well known theatrical play, “BeetleJuice,” was showcased at the United Church on Gower street on the second week of May here in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Having heard that the best showings were at night, I went with anticipation. The tickets for the show were $20 per person and I must admit halfway through the play I was not sure if that was worth the price but the second half after intermission was what really caught my attention.

I have heard of the name of this play but did not know exactly what is was about so I’m here to tell you that it’s a play that will make you feel many emotions or maybe just me as I am just another “over-emotional,” chick. So anyhow I was frightened, admittingly enough I had jumped but mostly I laughed with a friend during a good few comical scenes.

Now that I have your attention this play is about a newly wedded couple and their wedded bliss in the beginning before they tragically die in a car accident. Adam and Barbara become stuck in their own home with an eccentric family of a step mother striving to be an artist as her clothes state the obvious, including a fairly normal father with his gothic estranged fourteen year old daughter. The most exciting part has yet to come when Beetlejuice is called upon to “help,” the couple get rid of this crazy money driven family aside of the gothic child. The entire play had its odd twists and turns but what made it what it was, definitely had to be what each individual character brought to this play. Gaston took his role as BEETLEJUICE to a whole new level. He did a spectacular job with this quite insane character and added a lot of spice to the play. The second half was my favorite part of the entire night and I would have recommended it as a one time must see. The only unfortunate part is that I saw the last showing but it was a good show and I got to enjoy it with a friend who shares my amusement on the humor in “Beetlejuice.” Kootos to the Stage Manager!

MEREDITH SHAW PREMIERS "STARS" MUSIC VIDEO

Singer songwriter Meredith Shaw is thrilled to release her latest music video “Stars” featuring actor Harmon Walsh (Gossip Girl, Law & Order, As the World Turns) and directed by Philip J Connell.  With a “Hitchcock meets Mad Men” visual treatment, the video was designed to bring out the feeling in the song of longing for something that may or may not ever happen.

“The song is the moodiest one on my record, and my nickname is Muffy so Tim Chaisson’s guitar player rightly coined it “muffy metal”,” says Shaw with a giggle,  “when the director and I sat down to talk concepts we knew we wanted the visual tone to match the sonic tone and that lead us to a Mad Men meets Hitchcock romantic thriller. We wanted to evoke a sense of danger while keeping things sexy and playing with the ideas of destiny & control.”

With a story that is somewhat elusive and ethereal, it was fitting that the video was shot on Leap Day, Feb 29th – note the choice of the 29th floor elevator button in video as a homage to the once-every-four-year event.  The video was shot in a 50th Floor condo high above the Toronto skyline… a feature that was prominent in the concept.

“As an artist I’m all about collaboration and with the band performance shot I thought it would be cool to ask my guitar player Kori’s band Speedo Tuxedo to be in it,” explains Shaw.  “I’ve certainly benefitted from the exposure Gordie Johnson has offered me with Big Sugar; Speedo Tuxedo have just moved to Toronto from out west so I thought I’d pay it forward.”

Connell has been producing and directing since 2001 through his production company Toolkit Productions, however, “Stars” was his first music video. Now in pre-production, he is currently directing a short film called Kissing Drew supported by the Ontario Arts Council.

“You may recognize my “love interest” in the video Harmon Walsh,” points out Shaw, “we stole him from Gossip Girl, and yes, he is that good looking in person too.  It just isn’t fair.”

PATRIZIA RELEASES NEW COLLECTION

Fusing classical, opera, pop and rock, Canada’s Rock Soprano Diva Patrizia has always been an artist that is hard to define or categorize.  The new collection I Am Patrizia, to be released April 3, includes an iconic Queen song “Show Must Go On”, a dance pop mix “I Won’t Stop Believin'”, the famous Carmen aria “Seduction” and one of the most difficult arias ever written Mozart’s “Rage, Queen of the Night.”

With a 4-octave operatic voice, capable of singing pop, Italian born, Canadian raised Patrizia attracted impressive collaborators for this album.  The newest tracks were recorded with producer and multi-instrumentalist Tristan Avakian, who has worked with Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, Trans Siberian Orchestra and Queen.  On the iconic Queen song “Show Must Go On”, Avakian brought in legendary David Bowie piano player Mike Garson, who gave “Aladdin Sane” its avant garde jazz feel and later worked with Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails.

Other tracks on the album were produced by Steve Thompson (Guns N Roses, Madonna, Whitney Houston), Murray Daigle and Vic Park Productions (Keshia Chanté, Aleesia, Massari), Kenny Maclean (Platinum Blonde) and Paul Milner (Keith Richards, Eddy Grant). Milner brought in acclaimed guitarist Kevin Breit whose credits include Norah Jones, Celine Dion, Rosanne Cash, k.d. lang and Lou Reed.

Patrizia has a vision for her bright future in the music industry above and beyond just performing. She wants to make classical music more mainstream and rid it of elitist associations by mixing it with other genres and updating it to be relatable to the struggles and victories of everyday people. “I want to connect with the common person on an emotional and visceral level,” says Patrizia, “music used to break barriers, it’s time we shed this last vestige of prejudice and embrace music on the basis of whether it moves us or not.”
