There’s no better way to gauge a rock band’s individuality (or lack thereof) than seeing how they handle an acoustic set, and for me The Lazys ranked off the charts. I have yet to see the recently transplanted Australian hard rockers play a live plugged in set, but after seeing what they could do with two members, one guitar and 15 minutes, it was enough to convince me that I’ve been seriously missing out.

I’d met singer Leon Harrison at CMW’s Mentors Café earlier in the day and was genuinely charmed by his no-bullshit insight, which is how I ended up making a last minute (and late) stop at Supermarket to catch him and guitarist Matty Morris doing a stripped down set for an Australian artists showcase. To put it bluntly: I was damn surprised by what I got. Usually, acoustic sets bore the shit out of me, but these two had me engaged the second I stepped in. Leon was no less authentic on stage than he was face to face, tickling the seated audience with his relaxed humour as he sipped on a pint between songs. Next to him, Matty was headbanging his shampoo-commercial-perfect hair while somehow remaining perfectly perched on his stool.

The pair ended off the set by having the audience stand and yell out lyrics, followed by a new tune that could stand on Leon’s smokin’ hot bluesy rasp alone – no filler needed. The full band is plugging in at The Horseshoe on May 12 and I’ll be there with bells on.
