Authentic Imperfection @ Revival — Your Shot Festival

Authentic Imperfection, Revival bar, march 16, 2014

Who: Authentic Imperfection
From: Toronto, ON
Where: Revival Bar
When: Sunday, March 16th, 2014

Total Score: 7/10

Style: Avant-garde

It was clearly a good decision to move Your Shot Festival to the Revival Bar, as the place was buzzing with people, be it fans of the bands or of the venue. The crowd was very warm to Authentic Imperfection, cheering and clapping after each song.

Authentic Imperfection filled the room with their strange but appealing sound, that blends Voltaire, Tori Amos and PJ Harvey into something else. The band is a four-piece, consisting of a cellist/vocalist, a guitarist, a bassist and a drummer. The distinct sound comes from the clash of haunting vocals and cello-based solos with the more upbeat rhythm section and guitar. The track that stood out the most was “Water”, which you can check out on their website.

While Authentic Imperfection have something truly wonderful cooking up, they still have a lot of fine-tuning to do. They are not always on pitch, which is harder to do and is way more noticeable with this kind of music. And the singer is really lacking in communication with the crowd, but that usually passes as the band starts getting more gigs.

I’m hoping to see more of Authentic Imperfection very soon!
