6 Famous Songs Written by Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars

Before starting his career as a solo musician and performing at the Super Bowl, Bruno Mars (aka Peter Gene Hernandez) was the ghost-writer or co-author for many hits. It is not uncommon to see people write songs for other artists, but these songs were hits on the airwaves and it might surprise you to find out that the real talent behind them was, in fact, none other than Bruno Mars and not the performing artist.

6. “One Day” by Matisyahu

Hasidic Jewish musician Matisyahu is known for his soulful hip-hop/reggea and rock mix of often quite religious music. His music blends many styles, with many themes about his Orthodox Jewish roots. So it may come as a surprise that some of his songs were ghost written in part by none other than Bruno Mars. Bruno Mars shows that he can put a beautiful touch on any theme, including one that isn’t necessarily directly related to him.

5. “Wear My Kiss” by Sugarbabes

Sugarbabes are a British pop group that is known for several hits such as “Freak Like Me”, “Hole in the Head” and their cover of “Walk This Way”. As it turns out, Bruno Mars has colaborated in the writing process of one of their more recent hits, “Wear My Kiss”. Who’d have thought that British Pop would get a touch of Mars?

4. “Dumb Love” by Sean Kingston

Sean Kingston is best known for his song “Beautiful Girls” that filled the airwaves in 2007 and was later covered by pop-punk band Bayside. So it should come as no surprise to find out that someone of this magnitude has turned to Bruno Mars to help him in the writing process. For fans of Bruno Mars, it becomes very obvious that Mars added his personal touch when co-writing this song. Listen for yourself and find out

3. “Long Distance” by Brandy

Brandy has released many hits over the years. It turns out that her chart breaking song (#24 Bubbling Under Hot in 2008; #38 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, #17 Global Dance Tracks, and #1 Hot Dance Club Songs, all in 2009) was quite based on a demo by Bruno Mars, as well as being written by Mars.

2. “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy

Most people know Travie McCoy as the frontman for Gym Class Heroes before he started his solo career. Most people know Billionaire for Bruno Mars’ very catchy chorus, that, it appears, that Travie McCoy was gracious enough to let Mars perform with him. As it turns out, this song was written by Bruno Mars, and that is not the first time that McCoy relies on Mars’ talents to add his magical touch. So really, was it the good grace of McCoy to let Mars sing that catchy chorus, or his way of saying thank you? We’ll never know. Til then, sing at the top of your heads “I wanna be a billionaire, so f*cking bad!”

1. “Fuck You” by CeeLo Green

When we think of CeeLo Green, we think of his now infamous “Hahaha bless your soul”, in “Crazy” by his duo-project Gnarls Barkley, we think of American Idol, and, of course, we now think of “He’s an Xbox, I’m an Atari” from “Fuck You” (“Forget You”, as the radio censored it). Well this one came as one of the biggest surprises: it was in fact NOT written by CeeLo himself. At least not entirely. Could Bruno Mars’ touch explain the slightly jazzy vibe of this song? The slightly bitter taste that the song leaves in our mouths when we hear about a break-up in an eloquent way? The overall humor of the song that will leave you laughing? Bruno Mars definitely outdid himself in this collaboration, and it was quite a surprise to see that he had his hands in this hit. CeeLo Green definitely did this writer a great homage in his performance of the hit.

So we can see that Bruno Mars has collaborated in and been an influence for a lot of songs, that have later had an impact on his own career path. It has permitted his talent to flourish, to be discovered by the industry and has made of him an exceptional star. Hey it’s not just anyone who can perform at the super bowl, anyways. So to close, let’s look back at the song that threw Bruno Mars out there and has started his career and showed that he is amazing, just the way he is:
