Billy Talent – YDS – 2013 – Andrej Ivanov

Now in it’s 20th year, Toronto’s North By North East festival officially kicks today Friday June 13th, with the music portion shifting into full gear next week.   There are some interesting surprises in store this year including the MiO Squirtcar which will see a TTC street car turned into a venue for three days.

We at The Scene have done our homework and complied our top choices to help you sift through the hundreds of talented bands that are scheduled to play this year.

Here’s our play by play, feel free to head over the NXNE.com and add these shows to your personal schedulizer.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 18

Start your night out at the Hideout on Queen West with the talented sounds of “I Hate Todd” and stick around to be blow away by the White Stripes/meets Metric from Calgary’s Go For The Eyes.     Immediately hop a cab to the Mod club where you won’t regret making the rush to hear a Toronto band that gives Queens Of The Stone Age a run for their money, Dearly Beloved.   Take a breather and stagger back to the Bovine Sex Club on Queen West to have your face melted with the true metal sounds of Midnight Malice (1am) and Diemonds (2am)

THURSDAY JUNE 19

Thursday is a night to open the mind and unwind.    Probably the most unique artist playing NXNE this year (don’t believe me?  listen to her!)  The Jessica Stuart Few is an early evening delight that no one with good ears should miss.  Next hop a street car south to the Cameron House to catch the new buzz out of Winnipeg (now Toronto) Slow Leaves (AKA Grant Davidson), you will not be disappointed.    Take a rest before hopping on the Queen West street car towards Wrongbar where you’ll find Hollywierd 60’s garage three piece Beach Day.    Finally get your ass to Kensington Market fast and find Handlebar.   Upon entering you shall be treated with the indie punk sounds and breakdowns of Elizabeth (the band).     Grab another round and sit down before experiencing the heaviest beautiful bricks drop from LA’s A Sol Mechanic, one of the most talented DJs you’ll find anywhere.

FRIDAY JUNE 20

Start early and catch Eagulls from Leeds UK at YDS, don’t worry if you can’t skip work or the weekend warm up starts late you’ll still have two more chances to catch them.   Get to the Tranzac and listen to some of the best songwriters in Ontario “The Maladies Of Adam Stokes”.   YO-YO yourself back downtown again to catch the always pleasing  Cai.ro at the Rivoli for 10pm and grab a handful of drinks to butter you up for the rock out stage of the night.   Chicago’s Bailiff are playing just down the street at The Hideout at midnight, there is NO EXC– USE to miss this band (one of the best playing the festival!!!).     The Studio bar is not that far of a walk or quick cab ride after Bailliff’s set you’ll have 40mins to get there to catch the mysterious Conrad Clifton from Brooklyn.   Clifton is a real anomaly and certainly worth putting on any trendsetter searcher’s radar.    Finally take your time to trek a few blocks to The Silver Dollar to meet Japan Girls!  YES!   JPNSGRLS (pronounced “Japanese Girls”)…trust us, this will be fun 🙂

SATURDAY JUNE 21

Saturday leaves two paths you can go by, but in the long run there’s still time to ….( yes we almost said that)….Like all great festivals the last Saturday is always a tough decision maker/breaker.   Path 1 will take you on a game of pong between The Cameron House and The Horseshoe Tavern, but you ultimately end up with Joel Plaskett (not a bad deal).   Path 2 is a little easier and gives you a chance to catch up with Eagulls (if you missed them earlier) as they open up for local powerhouse METZ.

If you are on path 2 leave Lee’s immediately following METZ and get down to familiar territory on Queen West.    No matter what path you’re on, rendezvous at The hideout for Silvergun & Spleen at 2am.
