Indie Week – UBI & FU – (Indie Week 2014)

Who: UBI & FU
From: Japan
Where: The Silver Dollar
When: Thursday, October 16, 2014

Crowd: Sadly only a handful of people showed up.  About 20 bystanders, mostly from the other bands, stood silently and stared.  One patron emphatically yelled out “you’re awesome!” about half way through his set which lightened up the mood.

Style: A single man on stage with guitar loop pedals singing in a foreign language, Japanese Indie Folk?

Technicalities:  Sadly the vocals were drenched in reverb at UBI & FU’s request.   It was difficult enough that Ubi can hardly speak English, but with the added verb, it made it impossible to understand one thing he sang and almost nothing he said.   His vocal timing and singing voice is quite good, so this technicality really was a shame.
Also the guitar was simply too loud to enjoy without ear plugs.

Image:  With his pointy hat and long silk scarf, the guy looks like some sort of foreign Hendrix folk legend gnome!  Bonus: toe shoes/sandals = a hipster’s paradise!

Moment: Ubi did stop to explain his songwriting: “These songs come from my ancestors, they are over 800 years old.  So sometimes I don’t understand them.”

Comments:  If you are looking for something unpretentious and true, Ubi & Fu is the right thing for you.
