Style: Indie pop

Crowd: As the headliners of the night, the audience was excited for Groenland to begin their set. Everybody was dancing to the contagious beats and obviously enjoying the band’s sound. So much so that no one was ready for their set to end and they were called back out for an encore.

Technicalities: Groenland had plenty of instruments that contributed to their original, folk-meets-indie-meets pop sound. Sabrina Halde captured everyone’s attention (and hearts) with her unfaltering voice. She hit each note relentlessly with perfect pitch. In addition, she multi-tasked by strumming a ukulele and playing both keyboards and percussions. Jean-Vivier Levesque also multi-tasked with keyboards, electros and percussions. His use of synthetic sound generators gave Groenland an exceptional tang of originality. Jonathan Charette perfected their tempo with his upbeat, clever drumbeats while Simon Gosselin added intensity to tracks with his heavy bass lines. Mixing in cellist Gabrielle Girard-Charest and violinist Fanny C. Laurin made for an incredibly euphonically pleasing sound that affected all the senses.

Image/Sex Appeal: With six people continuously moving around to different instruments on stage, it gave the image of a busy performance. This added to the wonderfully engaged sound they emitted and truthfully their image merely complimented their music.

Memorable Moment: Easily the most vivid moment of the performance was their cover of James Blake’s Retrograde. Groenland covered the song perfectly, adding in their own free spirited tastes of electronic pop. The defining factor of this cover was Halde’s passionate vocals, which matched that of James Blake but from a female perspective.

Overall: Groenland put on a performance full of enthusiasm and sensory appeal that was almost overwhelming. Everything about their set was incredibly beautiful, and I don’t think one person left unsatisfied.
