Seth MacFarlane To Host 2013 Oscars

First-time Academy Awards producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron finally announced this Monday that Seth MacFarlane will host the 85th Academy Awards ceremony, which will be broadcast live next year on Sunday, February 24, on CTV in Canada and ABC in the U.S. The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Digital Theater at Hollywood & Highland Center.

“We are thrilled to have Seth MacFarlane host the Oscars,” said the producers. “His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh.”

“Seth is unbelievably talented,” said Hawk Koch, the President of the Academy. “We couldn’t be happier with the creative team we’ve assembled. With Craig, Neil, and now Seth, we’re off to a great start.”

“It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars,” said MacFarlane. “My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.”

Seth MacFarlane is probably best known for creating the now-infamous animated sitcom Family Guy. He has also co-created the lesser known (but still popular) animated sitcoms American Dad! and The Cleveland Show. MacFarlane has so far received 13 Emmy nominations and won two for his work on Family Guy.

This year, MacFarlane made his debut as a movie director with his successful comedy Ted, in which he starred alongside Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis as the eponymous, foul-mouthed teddy bear. Ted has earned over $420 million worldwide, which makes it one of the highest-grossing comedies of the year.

MacFarlane is also known for his musical talents. Last year, he released his first album “Music Is Better Than Words,” which earned him two Grammy nominations. He has also performed live at London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall — both of which were sold-out shows.

Those who are in doubt of MacFarlane’s “hosting” abilities should know that this September MacFarlane hosted the 38th premiere of Saturday Night Live, and he was rather entertaining. He has of course hosted numerous other shows and ceremonies, like Comedy Central Roasts and Canadian Awards for the Electronic & Animated Arts. Many viewers have noted that MacFarlane has a real on-stage presence — he knows how to control his audience and better yet, how to make them laugh.

While it is hard to tell whether MacFarlane would be able to top or even match the amazing Oscars hosts like Billy Crystal and Johnny Carson (both of whom have hosted the ceremony more than twice), it is safe to say that he would definitely not sink to the levels of horrible hosts like James Franco, who hosted in 2011, or David Letterman, who hosted in 1994.

MacFarlane is a smart and eloquent gentleman with a lot of untapped potential (still), which means that he can make a great Oscars host (he better!). Now, check out this amusing video of Seth MacFarlane breaking the news to his dad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgqRnlOEhoE.
