Coffee Matters, located in a renovated grand old building on Military Road, is the most upscale of the numerous cafes in the city. Upon entry, you notice the distinct Italian inspired grandeur of the decor with its high ceilings, warm lighting, comfortable seating and ornate details throughout. For all its flair, it remains unpretentious, one feels welcome and relaxed, and the service is fast and friendly.Care has been taken with all aspects of the cafe, from atmosphere, to menu, and staff. The cafes location also fits in well with the neighborhood, which is full of glorious Victorian heritage structures, a bit of old world charm still thriving in our expanding boomtown.

The menu at Coffee Matters is simple and creative. The coffee itself is organic, fair trade and roasted locally, there is always a variety of roasts to choose from, as well as plenty of specialty coffees, iced beverages and smoothies. In addition to the beverages there is an impressive array of quality dessert items like cheesecake, as well as pastries, muffins and cookies for any sweet tooth. For lunch and supper, Coffee Matters offers a soup and sandwich menu with fresh daily specials.

For my meal at Coffee Matters, I ordered their Mediterranean Chicken Pesto Sandwich. Featuring chicken breast strips, provolone cheese, roasted red peppers, spinach and pesto on a grilled panini bread, it was a satisfying mix, not too heavy but not too light. Sun Dried Tomato flavored veggie chips rounded out the meal and made for an unfussy side that paired well with the flavors of the sandwich. My dining companion chose one of the soup specials, a Roasted Red Pepper Soup, which came with grilled panini bread for dipping. The soup had a similar consistency to a cream soup, but it is simply the thickness of pureed roasted peppers that gives the soup its richness. It is easily one of the best things on the menu, a perfect soup for a cold March day in St. John’s. For dessert I kept it simple and had a Raspberry Yogurt Muffin, a delightful sweet treat made a bit healthier and super moist with the addition of yogurt.

Coffee Matters is without a doubt a perfect place to catch up with friends over a bite or just relax with a good book or your laptop. Quality is out into both the products and the service. It’s a neighborhood fixture for me and many more. Give it a try for a coffee or a full on lunch. Coffee Matters is open Monday to Friday from 7am – 10pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am-10pm.
