When a band surpasses your expectations by bringing a performance more impressive than their recordings, it is certainly a pleasant surprise. This was the case for The Joy Formidable, not solely by playing their songs faultlessly but also radiating an energy onstage that only exists live in the moment. If you are impressed with their albums, just wait until you experience them live, and be prepared to be captivated and immersed by their ecstatic energy.

Fashionably dressed in platform wedges and a pink lace dress, lead singer, Ritzy Bryan deemed the show to be the “unofficial album release party for Canada,” as their new album “Hitch,” had just been released in North America. The endearing Welsh band continued to deliver witty banter and humourous interaction with the audience in between songs. The skillful drummer, Matt Thomas was bold and enthusiastic, sitting directly to the left of Bryan and appropriately sharing the spotlight. Lead Guitarist, Rhydian Dafydd, provided backing vocals and guitar riffs that paired well with Bryan’s lead vocals. The band played old and new songs, with longer instrumental outros than their recorded versions, keeping the crowd hooked and rocking out until the very end. The room gave a unanimous call for an encore, and the trio returned to the stage to relieve the audience of their craving by performing three additional songs, ending with their well-loved “Whirring.”

The Joy Formidable knows how to keep the audience not only entertained, but mesmerized during their performance. Through extended outros, guitar riffs, and collaborative jamming, the band kept the crowd dancing and cheering until the very end.

If you missed them this time, not to worry as Ritzy Bryan promised they would certainly be back in Toronto again now that their latest album, “Hitch” has finally been released.
