Shadows and Light — A Tribute to Joni Mitchell

Forty years after she became a household name, Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell’s songs will fill the LSPU Hall, channelled by over a dozen members of St. John’s talented young folk scene on March 23rd and 24th.

Shadows and Light: A Tribute to Joni Mitchell, directed by local musician and music teacher Natasha Hartery (The Burning Hell, Beach B’ys, Jazz East, Quintessential Vocal Ensemble) will span the entirety of Mitchell’s storied career: from her early folk work like “Big Yellow Taxi” to her later jazz repertoire including “Drycleaner from Des Moines”.

Hartery drew on the local community for vocalists and instrumentalists capable of capturing Mitchell’s unique soprano and distinctive playing, and has assembled a mighty cast talent. Singers will include both established and up-and-coming folk singers such as Sherry Ryan, Katie Baggs (All the Wiles), Joanna Barker and Rebecca South (The Drows).

The music will be handled by a dozen die-hard local musicians, including Mark Bragg, Mathias Kom, Bryan Power, Chris Davis, Greg Bruce and Terry Campbell; staying true to Mitchell’s distinctive instrumentation and tunings. This show will feature a full horn section, dulcimer, lap steel, auxiliary percussion, and soaring five-part harmonies.

“I’m thrilled to finally be paying homage to one of the best songwriters of all time, with some of the best musicians in this province,” says Hartery. “She inspires so many of us.”

Tickets are $16 ($13 for students) including LSPU Hall maintenance fees and are available at the LSPU Hall Box Office by calling 753-4531 or online at
