It’s been eight years since Erika Kulnys released her first album. That sounds like a long time, but you could say it’s worth the wait. It gave Erika the time to craft beautiful, heartfelt songs. Wings has a very unique sound, so unique it’s hard to stick it into one genre. Some of the songs sound more pop driven, while others are obviously more folk or country driven; there’s even a jazz song thrown into the mix called “Good Time Gangster”. Erika’s voice is wonderful; it has a soft peaceful tone to it, and it really draws you in. Coupled with her wonderful lyrics, you’re left with an album that really stands out.

The album starts off with the title track “Wings”; an uplifting track about life and love. It really sets the tone for the rest of the album, and brings one of the main themes of the album into play: birds. Most of the songs on the album make reference to birds, whether it’s a loon, eagle, crow, etc. The use of birds in this album represent taking off, transcending through tough times and heart break, finding self-acceptance, love, and success.

If you want to check out some tracks from the album, my favourite tracks on it are “Keep Your Feet Moving” and “Wings”. I think they’re great representations of how talented Erika is, with both singing and songwriting.

Overall, this album is a great listen. If you’re looking for something to do tonight in Halifax, drop by St. George’s Round Church (2222 Brunswick St.) for Erika’s CD release show! Doors open at 7:30pm and the release begins at 8pm!
