Who: Yamantaka // Sonic Titan
Where: St. Matthew’s Church, Hfx NS
When: October 19 2012 @9pm

Crowd: A 3/4 full venue, packing maybe 150 folks into pews.

Style: This crew was completely genre bending. Elements of rock, contemporary, and metal.

Technicalities: Warm red lighting filled the stage. They were a pretty stationary band, and one dude used a native drum frequently to resonate a thick heart beat around the church walls. The whole atmosphere felt slightly sacrilegious, but that’s cool in my books.

Memorable Moment: Overall, these folks were like nothing I’ve ever seen. Native and Japanese, their faces painted, rocking native drums and kimonos. The coolest moment was when I walked into an awesome drum led instrumental to open the set. It went on for a few minutes. It was incredibly intense and hardcore.

Sex Appeal: I’d go with cool appeal on this one. The face paint was wicked.

Memorable Song: “A Star Over Pureland”. This was the opening tune for their set. Just sick drums and howling vocals.

Comment: The vocals were really hard to make out, which is demonstrated on the actual album too. These guys seem to be mostly about rhythm and crazy howling and screeches. Not my scene, but damn, it was cool.
