No opener was needed for this Boombox-BangBangin’ Star last Thursday, as Jesse J played her first ever Toronto gig, and boy was it beautiful! After hearing Justin Timberlake quoting her as “ one of the best vocalists in the industry, my expectations were high yet I was nowhere near disappointment. The second that she strut out onto stage, rocking a post kook-aid hairdo, her sound filling Danforth Music Hall. All hands and beers were in the air pumping to the beat of “Ain’t Been Done”.

Unfortunately she had mentioned that she had caught something amidst our “cold” weather and was sick, so her voice would not be at 100%. If she had not mentioned it, we the audience would have no way of knowing because her voice was only heavenly, I guess one lucky fan will know for sure. When Jesse spotted a fan with a sign reading “ IT’S MY DREAM TO SING WITH YOU”, she wiped off her microphone, gave it to the fan and was in just as much awe as the rest of us when he started belting out “Mama Knows Best”. They shared that moment together..and now probably a cold as well.

Her name may be the act but not once did she make the night all about herself. As she shared the stage we heard some brilliant vocals from her back up singers, not to mention a fantastic bass solo from Michael ‘Smooth’ Hamilton during “Nobodies’ Perfect”.

There was not one song that the audience wasn’t singing along with word for word. Even during a song like “Domino”, it’s obvious how much fun she is having and she shows it! via various funny faces she makes or interacting and dancing with the audience.

“Price Tag” was the first song in her encore, and with what I would call a 1 minute wardrobe change into a “Bang Bang” T-shirt to end off the night with a bang… with “Bang Bang”. Yet it wasn’t just a bang that closed the night but with this number came guitar/keyboard/bass even vocal solos. May it be the electricity from the amps or the energy off of J, this night was the most fun and funky dance party I have been to all year! Thank you for roughin’ it out and not cancelling on us Jesse… You Rocked!
