Hawksley Workman Interview Jan 16, 2012

1. You travel a lot: What influences your music most places or people or both and why?

I HAVE WIDE EYES…  I SEE LOTS OF THINGS…  IT’S THE BITS IN BETWEEN…  BOTH PLACES AND PEOPLE…  BUT MAYBE DIFFERENT EARTHS GIVE OFF DIFFERENT ENERGY…

2.  You have a sound that is both modern and classic.   Who do you think is the most underrated classic recording artist of all time?

OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD…  THOMAS DOLBY

3. Name a modern artist who influences you.

JAY Z

4.  You’ve been featured on many television shows :  Scrubs, Being Human, Falcon Beach, Queer as Folk and Whistler.  how would you describe the politics of dealing with the television industry vs the recording industry..besides the residuals 🙂

LUCKILY I’VE NEVER REALLY HAD TO DEAL WITH THAT SORT OF THING…  THERE’S FOLKS WHO SEEM TO DO THAT FOR ME…

5.  You’ve been known to produce your own work.   If you were to let go and hire someone to produce  a future album.  who would be your dream producer (dead or alive)?

JEFF LYNNE

6. Being born and raised in Ontario, you obviously have a heart and passion that stems from there.  However,  what do you think of the talent you’ve met and worked with from eastern Canada, would you say we’re on par with the rest of Canada?

I THINK THE EAST COAST HAS ALWAYS PRODUCED SOME OF THE GREATEST MUSIC…  IT SEEMS THAT MUSIC IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE CULTURE…  MAYBE EVEN MORE SO THAN CENTRAL CANADA…

7.  Your band has had many line up changed over the years do you have any advice for aspiring solo artists on a fixed budget who are seeking national and international fame and acceptance.   Is there a secret to keeping your focus and making it happen year after year?

IT’S REALLY JUST WORK…  YOU HAVE TO BE MOVING ALL OF THE TIME…

8. With the current state of the recording industry focusing more on perfection of image rather than sound, would you say that we’re losing something?

IT SEEMS LIKE THERE’S A LOT OF GREAT MUSIC FLOATING AROUND OUT THERE MAYBE MORE THAN EVER, IT JUST DOESN’T GET A BIG PUSH BY MAJOR LABELS…  POP MUSIC IS REALLY ON ITS OWN PATH…  QUITE SEPARATE…

9.  Your songwriting reminds me of Ron Sexsmith, a prime example of someone who focuses on music rather than image.  He rarely makes videos and always makes great songs.     Have you worked with Ron?  Would you like to site any other Canadian artists who are genuine to the craft of songwriting?

I THINK WHEN IT COMES TO SONG WRITING IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE…  CANADIANS HAVE ALWAYS DOMINATED…  THE LIST IS LONG OF INFLUENTIAL CANADIAN SONGWRITERS…  I’VE ONLY EVER DRANK RON’S LANDLORD’S HOMEMADE WINE WHILE PASSING THE GUITAR AROUND AT A PARTY…

10.   Do you think that the digital movement of music will eventually lead to the great artists prevailing or do you think that the shallowness of social media will someday make great artists meet their demise?

I THINK THAT HOMEMADE SWEATERS ARE MUCH MORE OBVIOUS WHEN MOST FOLKS ARE WEARING STORE BOUGHT…

11.  What’s on your ipod today?

PROBABLY THE CAT…

12.  Digital download or vinyl?

VINYL.

13.  Tape or digital (pro tools) and why?

TAPE.  IT’S GOOD AT SEX.  PRO TOOLS IS JUST PRETENDING…

14.  Beer or whiskey?

WINE.

15.  Facebook or twitter?

TWITTER.

16.  Elvis: Presley or Costello?

HMMMM.

17.  Motorhead or Metallica?

ZEPPELIN.

18.  When you where first starting out did you ever think about quitting?  does the thought ever still cross your mind?

INDEED…  THERE’S A GREAT DEAL OF DISAPPOINTMENT IN THE MUSIC BIZ…  YOU TRY SO HARD, YOU PUT IN ALL YOUR GUTS…  IT’S TOUGH TO FACE REJECTION…

19.  When you first told your parents that you wanted to make music for a living, what was their reaction?

I THINK IT SEEMED OBVIOUS PRETTY EARLY ON WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO…  MUSIC IS ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT CHOOSES YOU, YOU DON’T CHOOSE IT…

20.  Do you have any advice for kids who are thinking about starting a career in music?

IF IT’S YOUR TRUE CALLING, YOU HAVE NO CHOICE…  THE HIGHS ARE HIGH, THE LOWS ARE LOW…

21.  Best of worst road story?

AS SURVIVAL INSTINCT WOULD HAVE IT…  YOU FORGET THE WORST…

22.  Most memorable gig in the early days?

OPENING FOR MORISSEY…

23.   Any good van stories in the early days?  come on everyone has a broken down van story!

OURS WAS BROKEN INTO IN LIEGE, BELGIUM…  THEY STOLE MY BASS PLAYERS SHOES…

24.  How did it feel to win your first award?   Do you think awards mean anything?

I RECKON PEOPLE LIKE WINNING THINGS…  BUT I DON’T THINK IT MAKES THE SONGS MUCH BETTER…

25.  Where do you think the record industry will be in 20 years.  Will there be a such thing as a label?

I DON’T THINK LABELS HAVE A HUGE FUTURE…  POP MUSIC NEEDS TELEVISION…  THE TWO WILL BLEED TOGETHER…

26.   If you could spend a weekend in cancun with any legend dead or alive who would it be?

PROBABLY BONHAM…

27.   Do you think that rock n roll died in the 90s or just evolved?

I DIDN’T BUY THE “90S SAVED MUSIC” THING…

28.  Does digital DJ music interest you? Do you see yourself working with DJs or electronic music in the future?

MY RECORD MILK KINDA WENT DOWN THAT RAIN…  I LIKE TO DO STUFF THAT MAKES ME EXCITED…

29.   You’ve been all over the world!   tell us what you love most about St johns Newfoundland!

THE PEOPLE, FOOD, ENERGY OF THE PLACE, THE DUKE, THE SHIP, FISH CAKES, THE HARBOUR, SIGNAL HILL, BATTERY ROAD, ST. BRIDES, THE SEA SHORE, THE TOURISM COMMERCIALS…  MOST BEAUTIFUL PROVINCE I RECKON
