The Duke of Duckworth(aka the Duke) is one of St. John’s most famous pubs. It is featured weekly on CBC’s sleeper hit show “Republic of Doyle”.

Before being a star attraction for tourists eager to see where Jake Doyle and Co. imbibe week after week, the Duke was the watering hole of many a downtown local and a number of ex-pats from the U.K. A pub in the English style tradition, the Duke has a wide array of beer on tap, including the Duke’s Own, a micro brewed beer formulated in house. Be sure to grab one as you peruse their pub menu, play a game of pool or darts, or watch the latest soccer match on one of their 3 huge flat screen t.v’s. The Duke may be traditional in some regards but when it comes to watching the game clearly no expense was spared. It’s one of the big draws there, along with Republic of Doyle nights when the new season arrives in the January.

The food at the Duke compliments an English style pub feel. The most famous meal of all is their Fish and Chips which is among the best in the city. The Duke knows its way around seafood, as the chowder and pan fried cod are both excellent as well. This is thanks to the use of the freshest cod possible which really makes for a quality dish. The brunch menu is quite popular as well and it can often be tricky to get a table during brunch on the weekend. The portions are generous and can cure almost any hangover you can throw at it. For the weekend warrior there’s an excellent happy hour menu full of snacks to go with your pint. If you order the nachos, make sure you have a friend or two around to help you eat it, the platter is piled extra high. the wings are a safe bet too, they’re fairly sized, juicy, and you can choose from dry spiced and a variety of sauces. The medium spiced sauce is just right, just be sure to get some extra napkins.

For lighter fare, the Duke offers several salads as well as their impressive veggie club that is so tasty you won’t miss the meat at all. Keep in mind that the portions are still huge even though the food is light.

The Duke of Duckworth is open:
