International Flavors, standing prominently at the corner of Quidi Vidi Road and Signal Hill Road on the edge of downtown St. John’s, is positively beloved by many in the city. It’s a bustling neighbourhood curry shop brightly decorated with just a few small tables. It lets the food do all the talking.

The big money maker is take-out and there’s plenty of traffic every single day. It’s easy to see why, as they serve up some of the city’s finest Pakistani foods all at a very reasonable price.

Simplicity is the beauty of International Flavors in both its menu and general style. The minimalist menu consists of a handful of items that centre around veggie or chicken curry. Whichever you choose, it is served up with a pile of vegetables, basmati rice, and lentils. Plus there’s the option of ordering a regular or large size. Both are generously portioned and if you’re ordering to go, it is often overflowing from its container. Fresh made naan and roti breads are available to go with your meal and are the perfect complement as well as an efficient way to scoop up all that curry.

What really sets International Flavors apart is its use of local favourites like carrot, turnip, and potatoes in their curries. My dining companion said it actually made him think of Jiggs Dinner. It is certainly an excellent fusion, root vegetables really add to the rich flavours and warmth of curry.

It can be very busy there so be sure to call ahead if you’re ordering take out. There’s usually a table or two free, so if you have time dine in. Prices range from $10 to 20 depending on what size of meal you order and whether or not you have naan, roti, or a drink along with it.

I give it a 4 out of 5, the food is well priced, great quality, and the service is casual and top notch. One area in need of improvement would be their use of styrofoam takeout containers, which can be very messy when full of such huge portions. Other than that it is well worth it for what you get and how flavourful and downright comforting the food is. You’ll be a regular visitor in time.

International Flavors is open 5 days a week(Tuesday to Saturday) from 11am to 7pm.
