Piatto Pizzeria and Enoteca, located on Duckworth Street between The Republic Pub and The Afghan Restaurant, is a dining experience not to be missed. The space is smartly decorated in a classic palate of black, white, red and dove grey. With Vespa scooters, vintage bikes, and bike related photos mounted on the walls, the atmosphere is at once very stylish yet not at all intimidating. Upon entering I was greeted by a friendly and welcoming hostess as I took in the layout that features a pizza prep area with a red and black tiled pizza oven prominently in the rear and large windows in the front looking out onto Duckworth Street.

In warmer months these windows can be opened, a feature in several downtown restaurants that adds to the ambiance. Black wood tables and chairs seating four to six are positioned comfortably throughout, making for cozy surroundings. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or an intimate gathering of friends and family. Though Piatto is a newer restaurant, it feels already very much established, like your friendly neighborhood Italian restaurant that’s been around for years.

Like its competition, Pi Gourmet, Piatto specializes in gourmet thin crust pizza. Both establishments use quality ingredients and cheese all on a vegan crust but that’s really where the similarities end. Pi is more about creative gourmet pizzas that are unique takes on classic or boldly original new tastes, whereas Piatto’s style seems to be a nod to old fashioned authentic Italian pizza. In fact, all menu items have Italian titles. Hard to pronounce yes, but give it a shot and if you can’t get it the waitstaff know it off by heart anyway. Their menu as a whole is simple Italian fare, from the Antipasto dishes on the appetizer menu, to fresh salads and their more substantial Calzones. The pizza at Piatto, of course, is their biggest draw and is available in either a red base, featuring San Marzano tomato sauce, or a white base, featuring either olive oil, pesto or a cream sauce. There are eight red pizza and five white pizzas to choose from with a variety of high quality toppings.

My dining companion and I kept it simple for our meal, ordering their Napolentana Foccocia, a garlic and parmesan flat bread served with olive oil for dipping as an appetizer. For such a simple starter, it really impressed and is a step up from greasy garlic fingers. The chili infused olive oil that we selected for dipping heightened the flavors of the Foccocia as well. I definitely recommend it as a starter to your meal at Piatto, it’s just enough to tide you over as you wait for your main course and it won’t leave you too full when it arrives.

For our pizza, my dining companion and I decided on the Amantidella Carne Speziata, which is basically like Piatto’s take on the meat lovers pizza. It features their fresh tomato base, mozzarella, pepperoni, crumbled hot Italian sausage and Grana Padeno, a spicy high quality cured meat, plus banana peppers. The pizza was a great introduction to Piatto’s pizza style. There was no shortage of toppings and the cheese was the perfect pizza cheese, mild and a bit stretchy and gooey. The crust is the best I’ve tasted anywhere, thin but thicker at the edges and slightly chewy. Their standard size pizzas are about 11-12 inches, great for 2 -3 people with appetizers, but I would recommend ordering more for larger crowds.

All in all, Piatto has some of the best dining in St. John’s. I found no issues during my meal there. I was warmly welcomed and quickly seated and the server was prompt , efficient and highly familiar with all aspects of the menu and specials of the day. The food is excellent and I look forward to returning again. It is also a very well priced restaurant for the quality of the food.Piatto Pizzeria and Enoteca is absolutely a must try.
