Gracie Joe’s is a laid back, stylish cafe in the trendy neighborhood of Signal Hill / Quidi Vidi. Located on the corner of Quidi Vidi Road and Forest Road in a refurbished grand old home, Gracie Joe’s serves up premium coffee, baked goodies, and a menu ranging from brunch to supper options with plenty of soups, salads, sandwiches and tortilla pizzas in between.

Gracie Joe’s tag line is “Food, Coffee, Art” and its walls are full of colourful photos of our provinces unique rural and urban architecture and landscape. The art lends a bit of vibrance to the otherwise simple, clean, comfortable minimalist decor of white walls and dark wood tables and chairs. There is also a little nook in the rear of the cafe with two large leather chairs to curl up in and a big picture window looking out upon Forest Road.

Both the food and the service at Gracie Joes are top notch. The waitstaff are very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. They’re always up for a chat when things are quieter and are attentive when things are bustling.

The cooks are creative and talented which comes out in the quality and presentation of the food served. Even a simple sandwich is of the utmost quality. One of their absolute best dishes is their Ham and Swiss cheese on multi-grain rounds, dipped in egg batter and oven baked with a grainy Dijon sauce perfect for dipping, which comes with a side of greens. It is an unexpected and fabulously tasty take on the classic Ham and Swiss sandwich.

Their soups of the day are always a safe bet as well, I sampled a Thai Coconut Curry Seafood Chowder that was on special one snowy stormy day. It was full of scallops and salmon with plenty of flavor, a quirky take on traditional chowder that I hope is on special again soon. There’s also some great options on the menu for vegetarians and vegans.

Gracie Joe’s also happens to serve up some of St. John’s best coffee coffee from B.C’s Kicking Horse roasters in both dark and light roasts. There are plenty of goodies to go with that coffee, everything from cookies, coffee cake, scones, muffins, and brownies. Their gluten free brownie is decadent and practically melts in your mouth. Be sure to get there early if you want one though, the gluten free brownies are a hot seller.

Gracie Joe’s is open 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. for breakfast lunch and supper. They recently began to offer fine dining in the evening as well, which really sets them apart from other cafes in the city. There is but one caveat, be sure to have cash with you if you’re dining in or even just grabbing a cuppa joe and a treat to go, Gracie Joe’s is one of the only establishments that does not have a debit machine and is cash only.
